Welcome to another, You Asked, the Experts Answer, segment. This week ‘s question is: How can I stop overusing pronouns?

Pronouns: a word that can functions by itself as a noun/phrase and refers either to participants (e.g., I, you) or to someone or something mentioned elsewhere in the discourse.”  

Words such as I, he, she, you, it, we, or they are examples of pronouns used instead of a noun or noun phrase.

We overuse pronouns because we get attached to a character or the name is often easier. I can relate to this problem. However, easy doesn’t always translate to better writing.

Norma crept by the sofa where Adam had passed out after Adam’s little welcome home. The kitchen looked like one of those Norma had seen on TV after a tornado. Norma opened the cabinet, pulled out a trash bag, and began picking up the scattered groceries.”

I tend to write like I talk and as a result, overuse pronouns especially in the draft stage. But, there is a method to the madness and used correctly, pronouns will enhance your writing. The paragraph above reads like someone in love with the name Norma or had an aversion to pronouns.

Repeating the characters names, once introduced isn’t necessary. We understand Norma is the “she” picking up groceries and “his” refers to Adam.

Used Incorrectly Pronouns:

  • Creates choppy and boring sentences.
  • Pulls the focus away from the action in the scene.
  • Confuses the reader as to the who or what.
  • Pulls the reader from the story.
  • Tells rather than shows who and what is taking place.

Used correctly Pronouns:

  • Prevents repetition.
  • Creates a realistic flow of the narrative.
  • Keeps the focus on what’s happening in a scene.
  • Provides a sense of intimacy between characters.
  • Provides invisibility – like the tag “said,” readers process but don’t notice them.

When to Use Pronouns:

  • When only one character is present.
  • When two characters of opposite gender are present.
  • The pronoun’s reference is clear to the reader.

Use Names:

  • To introduce your character, item, or event
  • To ensure clarity between characters when there are more than two characters in a scene.
  • To emphasize a character or his name.

  5. Access Denied – received  116 views.

Top views went to the home page which includes the archives and my latest post. It’s the first impression point of connection. The other posts ranking highest in views offered information.

Writers at all levels understand the value of submitting work for publication. Submit or Not to Submit discussed the time-consuming but necessary tasks, outlined the benefits, and cautions of taking the leap of sending your words out into the world.

Top 5 Resources for Contests and Submissions takes the work out of the submission process by providing 5 resources for the writer who is ready to submit. Putting yourself out there can be intimidating, but the rewards are worth the anxiety. Acceptance promotes confidence, encourages creativity, is one of the best avenues for perfecting the craft, and provides both validation and recognition.

Readers want to know who you are, your credentials, and why your blog exists. An engaging About Me page not only introduces you to your readers, but provides the personal connection so necessary in drawing readers to your blog.

I like tackling difficult topics and Access Denied is one of those posts. Providing  information on the intellectual rights of a writer’s work and how to secure those rights,  after you’re gone.

What was the Connection?  In a word information.

Writers, particularly newer writers, seek out  information that is beneficial to them. Whether it helps them improve the skill of writing or offers the chance for recognition.

3 Things I  Learned by Reviewing the Stats:

  1. My readers want information, even if they’ve heard it before.
  2. Readers want easy access to the resources that help them improve or succeed.
  3. Providing resources and information into the readers mailbox is a win-win for everyone.

As long as I can remember, I loved putting words to paper, expanding on the great mysteries or the miseries of my young life. It was a way to get my point across without being shushed.

Introduction to the magic of words came early for me, as my mother was a voracious reader. She belonged to more than one book-of-the-month-club and even as young children, we were fortunate she passed the books to us, without censorship.

In between those many pages, I met a world of different people. Their words painted vivid pictures and gave breath to the hopes, fears, and dreams of a girl. In spite of her love of the written word, my mom repeatedly warned me, “Don’t ever  put anything in writing; you don’t want others to see.” Perhaps mom’s voice was the words from her books.

It would come later as a young, naïve girl before I understood the damage others could do when words are misconstrued, distorted, taken out of context or endure the deep cut of betrayal. I learned the hard way and after that hid my words away.

I’m an average woman, professional in background, a mother, grandmother, wife, friend, and a writer. I write now because I have a voice, and I can.

  • I write for catharsis, a purging of past sins, regrets, hopes, and dreams.
  • I write to share what knowledge and experiences I’ve acquired with those I love, hopeful they’ll be spared a wrong turn or learn the joy of sunny days.
  • I write to voice my opinion, my values, the very things I believe make the world, and us better people.
  • I write not that, in the end, my singular voice matters more than others do, or will move mountains, but perhaps, it will become one of many and create a chorus of positive change.
  • I write to expand my imagination and free my demons; we all have them.
  • I write to bring pleasure and encourage others to stretch their word wings, tell stories, real or imagined.
  • I write to leave a legacy to those I leave behind. Egotistical perhaps, but I want to surprise them. “That was mom? Sheila? She did that?” I don’t want to be forgotten or remembered only in faded photos or as the name on a bronze marker.

I write because I believe words have power. The power to move people, change them and change the world. After years of writing by a stream in a cow pasture, hiding my words from the world, between the pages of a worn-down journal, I have found my voice, and so I write.

 

 

 

Who’s on First? Confusing POV

Have you ever read a book where you lost who was telling the story? Ever had to flip backwards to determine the speaker? If you have, chances are the author was using more than one point of view (POV).

One of the most important aspects of planning is determining the point of view. Who do you want to tell the story and from what viewpoint. There are three basic viewpoints: First person, second person and third person. They’re variations within each; however, I’m only going to touch on the basic POVs.

First person or the “I” view brings the reader close to the action, making them  experience the story along with the character. The following Examples are adapted from one of my stories, Fair is Fair.

“I  took my time setting the tray of coffee on the table in the living room. Let him wait. He, along with every reporter in the country had vied for this interview for years. He would wait in the cold for as long as it took, of that I was certain.”

The downside is it’s easy to slip into a mode of “telling versus “showing,” or being too wordy or passive.

Second person POV is told through the voice of a narrator using “you, yours, and you’re.” Although, frequently used in self-help books, second person POV is not often used in fiction writing. Example:

“You don’t the truth. You want me to tell the story the way you think it should be told. You want me to sugar coat the facts so that it doesn’t offend your precious audience’s sensibilities. You get the story my way or not at all.”

The downside is it’s hard to write in second person and do it well without sounding like a self-help book, or sitting in a lecture hall.

Third person POV is told through the narrator’s voice using, “he,” “she,” or “it.”  It is the most common POV used in fiction.

“She grew up in a Christian home, believing in forgiveness and the  goodness of man. She didn’t believe in capital punishment. Judgment was reserved for God, but that was before. Now, all she could think about was how fast the executioner’s hand would fall.”

The downside of using third person POV is the narrator telling things of which they couldn’t possibly know. Unless it is third person omniscient, the narrator can only see what happens from a single character’s view.

Determining the POV in which to tell your story is important because, as in life, each POV offers a different perspective. Nothing is more frustrating or confusing to a reader than a sudden switch between POV. It jars the reader from the story and creates distance to the main character. If the reader can’t follow, he won’t care about your main character and when they stop caring, they stop reading.

A few times, I’ve found myself turning the pages backward in a book to figure out which character viewpoint I’m reading. It’s frustrating, confusing and reminds me of the famous skit, Who’s on First by  Abbott and Costello.

Writing in different POVs is acceptable; however, the key is to have a clear delineation between the changing POVs. This can be accomplished via white space, a new scene, or chapter to indicate the change. Whatever method you use, be consistent and you’ll never end up with the reader asking, Who’s on first?
