100 Word Challenge for Grown Ups – Week #159    …but you need cash…

“Jesus Becca, you gonna stare at that or drink it? You’re making me dizzy drawing circles. You think a genie is gonna pop out and grant you three wishes?”

Becca cast a sideways glance at her friend, Sam. “I’m thinking.”

“Thinking my ass, you’re sulking.”

Becca shrugged, “I don’t need them or the job.”

“But, you need cash to pay rent and put food on the table; you know, minor inconveniences.”

Becca slid three hundred dollars and a card across the table. New Age Escorts.

“The genie likes the way I draw circles,” she said, smiling.

Sleep is Overrated

Photobucket

My crashing point came on the fourth day without sleep. Three to four days is typical for me before the body overrides the mind and says, enough. Then, all I want is to close my eyes and sleep forever. I’d settle for 8 hours..

My eyelids heavy, I snuggled under the covers. It took a moment for his touch to register. “Please let me sleep.”

His hand moved softly down my skin as his kisses trailed my neck and shoulder. His face replaced the fog of sleep and I turned to him.

Who needs it, sleep’s overrated anyway.

Maggie’s Lesson in Democracy

100 Word Challenge for Grown Ups – Week#152     That’s democracy…

“Mom?”

Nell turned to her thirteen-year-old daughter, Maggie.

“Since we live in a democracy, you know, ‘consent of the governed,’ shouldn’t I get a vote?”

Nell admired her daughter’s spunk. “A vote?”

“I feel like I’m living under autocratic rule with you the self-appointed ruler.”

“I’m your mother and, by law, responsible for you.”

“But…”

“Actually, our democracy is practiced in the form of a republic, which provides checks and balances and an establishment able to thump an unruly mob on its head.”

“Mom!”

“At home, you’re the unruly mob and I’m the check and balances. That’s democracy, sweetheart.”

100 word Challenge for Grown Ups – Week#149 : This Week’s Prompt: April

April, when the world turned a luscious green and blooms burst forth celebrating new beginnings, was Mattie’s favorite time of year. Of particular joy were her prized azaleas lining the back corner of her lot.

“What are you using for fertilizer?” Her nosy neighbor Gertrude asked.

“Whatever Lowe’s recommends, and an extra pinch of magic,” Maggie said, tamping down a patch of loose soil.

“Magic, smagic, whatever you’re feeding them, it’s working. Bet Ben’s proud,” she said, watching Mattie carefully.

“No doubt. If I wasn’t the one doing all the work, he’d take credit for every bloom,” she said, laughing.
