The Great Divide

DAILY PROMPT: Divide

There are many directions I could take this prompt, however, given the fact we are already a divided country on just about every issue imaginable, I’ll stick to something more specific to me.  I call it the great divide – that space between what I plan to accomplish on any given day and those things I actually accomplish.

I’m an organizer by nature or perhaps by genetics (blame my mother) and in the past, all that organizing has helped me get things done promptly. Not so much anymore. The older I get, the more paralyzing it has become and the greater the divide.

20071126-todo-listDivision of any kind is unproductive and when it seems to be between my two ears; it is a bit worrisome.

Most days I’m able to focus and strike a line through every item on my to-do-list. Other times? I’m lucky if I write a sentence with the letters going in the right direction!

If this aging thing gets any more exciting, y’all might just get to see me tap dancing. Until then, I’ll divide my tasks minute by minute and hope to hell I get something finished.

A Mother’s Love

In response to The Daily Post’s writing prompt: “Must Not Fail.” What is the one thing at which you are the most afraid of failing?

No one aspires to failure. Everyone starts out with the hope of success. Yet, I don’t know anyone who hasn’t met failure head on, at least once. An inevitable part of life, failure, whether small or a life-changing experience, reveals  the stuff we’re made of. Do we see these failings as defeat or opportunities to try harder?

Who doesn’t look back and wish they’d done at least one thing differently? I’d give anything to have  the chance for a do-over, make different choices, or handled difficult situations, better. But, life does not offer us do-overs only the opportunities of today and tomorrow to get it right.

What is the one thing at which you are the most afraid of failing? Being the kind of mother where my children know, without a doubt, I love them unconditionally. I haven’t been the perfect mother by any means. I’ve made my share of mistakes but failing to convey my love to them, is not an option.

Whatever legacy or memories I leave behind let the warm arms of my love be the thing my children remember the most.

Five Sentence Fiction: Bubbles

Miranda wiped the sweat from his small bony brow, cringing with each labored rattle as if she were the one struggling to breathe.

She prayed to God to give him strength as his birdlike chest played sonorous vibrations against her hand.

He turned away from the nebulizer, “I can’t.”

She pulled the bottle with its tiny wand from her purse, and began to blow filling the room with translucent, glistening shells of hope.

His eyes fluttered open in childish wonderment as she lifted him, lowered the wand and watched his breath growing stronger with each magical blow.
