Submissions- Advice for Success

Day 19: #atozchallenge

As a writer, we all enjoy sending our words out into the universe and, particularly, achieving recognition. Submitting work takes careful consideration and time.

Success can be yours if you do these four basic things:

  1. Research the journals appropriate for your genre.
  2. Spend time reading the journals as well as the winning stories.
  3. Write a good story.
  4. Follow the guidelines of the journal in which you are submitting.

The article, 10 Observations from the Slush Pile by author and editor, Suzanne Vincent, is an excellent resource for the do’s and don’t of submitting your work. Check it out and take note.

Success is in the details.

When was the last time you submitted?

I’d love to hear your comments. Talk to me. Tell me your story and look for me on Facebook at SheilaMGood,  PinterestBloglovinTwitter@sheilagood, and Contently.

  1. What a great post! Thank you for sharing Suzanne Vincent’s post as well. It was very informative! I have been participating in the Sunday Scribbles Challenge each week on J.A. Allen’s blog: Scribbles on Cocktail Napkins. I won week two’s prompt, which was amazing (see the submission here:!

I haven’t yet submitted to a journal yet or magazine, but will definitely be looking into that in the future. Huffington Post is supposed to be a great one for writers to submit to!

  2. I honestly believe that writing that actually gets accepted is a mixture of having a good timely story that is excellently written and by that I don’t mean there aren’t any grammar mistakes. I mean the story has to have a certain pfiff to it.The story has to breathe life, fascination, and an aura of realness. It takes time to write such a story and I believe that is one of the reasons it takes so long to get your foot in the door.

I also agree with your points. Reading the journals, magazines or even books of the publisher or publication you are planning on submitting to is absolutely necessary.
