Route 66

The following photo is the ubiquitous PHOTO PROMPT. Study it. There are many roads you can take. Tell us where it leads in a hundred words or less.

I couldn’t have imagined a more romantic setting, for our honeymoon, than the Grand Canyon with its breathtaking views.

In spite of the cold winter winds and the ominous clouds which followed us, we threw the top back on the rented, 1991 white Mustang, and drove the historic Route 66.

The vast open range, Havasupai Indian Reservation, with its free ranging cows, and the hills of Sedona left me speechless with delight.

The caverns took us back in time, Hopi House gave us a piece of pottery history, and our companion clouds a Canyon blizzard.

Open Next Christmas

100 Word Challenge for Grown Ups – Week#162: The first prompt for 2015 is:    … As I put the decorations away I…

Mr. and Mrs. Santa has held an honored place on our Christmas tree for more than thirty years.

Santa’s foot tends to dangle while skin colored fabric pokes through Mrs. Santa’s hair.

As I put the decorations away, I savor the memories of  Christmases past and grieve the loss of the future.

Placing the tiny figures into the box marked, Open next Christmas, I send them to on where new memories are waiting to be made.

To my daughter,

In my absence, Mr. and  MRS. santa bring lots of love and a lifetime of memories.

I love you,

Mom.

Magic Bullet Smoothie

Five Sentence Fiction –  What it’s all about: Five Sentence Fiction is about packing a powerful punch in a tiny fist. Each week I will post a one word inspiration, then anyone wishing to participate will write a five sentence story based on the prompt word.

This week’s word: FRESH

IMG_3367Kara thrust the cup out to her husband, “Come on honey, it’s a smoothie with all your favorite fresh fruits; just one taste.

He  stepped back, waving the cup away. “Fruit my ass; I saw that pile of green stuff in the bottom and that slime ain’t crossing these lips,” he said, clamping his mouth closed like a two-year-old refusing medicine.

“I promise it tastes better than it looks and Doc Griffin’s gonna be thrilled when your cholesterol falls outta the heart attack range.”

“I might need a magic bullet,” he’s said through clenched lips, “but that ain’t it; I’ll take my chances.”

Intense Emotion Prompt

It’s a new year and time to stoke the fires of writing. Here’s an old prompt I came across while doing some housekeeping, and I thought I’d share it. My apologies to the original source, i don’t remember. Enjoy and I do look forward to reading your responses.

A character experiences a moment of intense emotion, either positive or negative. Without going into detail about how the character experiences this moment on an emotional or spiritual level, describe how the event affects your character physically (sweaty palms, tumultuous tummy, percussive hiccoughs). Through this physical response, show your reader the deeper, inner journey of your character.

Here’s mine: Lost Hope

gstatic images

Despair rolled over her like a slow-moving wave, pulling her under. She clutched at her chest as pressure mounted and a kaleidoscope of images tore through her mind. Tears, hot on her face, rolled down as her lips prayed for a morsel of hope. Finding none, she fell to her knees, releasing her pain in screams.
