Norma crept by the sofa where Adam lay, passed out after his little welcome home. She stared at the groceries scattered and broken on the floor and the trail of red pasta sauce.

She eased her battered body into the kitchen chair, blotted her lip with tissue, and placed an ice pack against her swollen jaw.

She watched the fall and rise of his chest and felt the weight in her apron pocket. The metal cold against her skin, she walked toward him.

Tired of tasting blood, Norma was ready for a taste of  freedom.

Mr. and Mrs. Santa has held an honored place on our Christmas tree for more than thirty years.

Santa’s foot tends to dangle while skin colored fabric pokes through Mrs. Santa’s hair.

As I put the decorations away, I savor the memories of  Christmases past and grieve the loss of the future.

Placing the tiny figures into the box marked, Open next Christmas, I send them to on where new memories are waiting to be made.

To my daughter,

In my absence, Mr. and  MRS. santa bring lots of love and a lifetime of memories.

I love you,

Mom.

I won’t bore you with  New Year’s resolutions, I won’t keep.

Instead, I want to thank you, my readers and friends for helping make the Cow Pasture Chronicles a  success.  2014 was a year of growth for the Cow Pasture and me. I’m thrilled you decided to be a part of it all and look forward to another exciting year, whatever it may bring. I hope that will include lots of laughter, fun and writing!

To you and yours, may 2015 be a blessed and prosperous new year!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Christmas is a  busy season of shopping, decorating, and baking.  The thoughts and preparations for Santa and family monopolize our days.  But once the last gift is opened, the leftovers put away, we’re on to the next thing, New Years resolutions.

As the year comes to a close, we reflect on last years accomplishments, or lack there of, and the promises we will make for the new year. We write them down, share them with family and friends, post them on Facebook and Twitter, hoping for accountability. We all want to be better people, better writers, parents, and citizens. My prayer for all of us is we shall succeed.

This past year has been tumultuous, particularly, in our country. Division is rampant. People feel disheartened and distrustful. For me, it represents a low point for our nation. But, I am confident the tide will turn and we as families and citizens will unite.

As we gather around the tree and banquet table this Christmas, let us remember the less fortunate, the troubled, those who are hurting and in despair. May one of our resolutions, for 2015, be more compassion for others. As we do not know what burdens they carry.

Let us remember the true reason for Christmas, a season of love and redemption, for all of us.

Thank you for stopping by the Cow Pasture and I wish for you and your family a very Merry Christmas and prosperous New Year.
