Looking out the window, all I saw were tall buildings and people. My heart fluttered with fear. I wanted to pack her up and take her home. This sprawling metropolis overwhelmed this small town mom. A person could get lost here.

Her excitement vibrated off the walls of the room. Where she saw adventure, I saw reruns of Dateline and posters of missing loved ones. These were her dreams. The fear all mine.

I wrapped my arms around my daughter. It was time to let go. “I’m so proud of you. You’re gonna love it here.”

Reading is a favorite pastime of mine. I imagine it is for most writers.

One of the things I like the most about reading is passing on a good story for others to enjoy. Doing so, not only promotes the author’s work but provides you with something new to read.

First up, in no particular order, is  Wednesdays, A Story, By Kay Eldredge, Narrative Magazine’s Fall Contest Winner.

Second, from Carve Magazine, Possession, by Adrienne Celt.

Higher Ground

Matilda took the pills and sat her cup aside. She gripped the sink’s edge to steady the relentless tremors.

Gazing out the window, she watched the ripples turn to rapids. Unprecedented flooding, forecasters warned, move to higher ground.

She’d lived by that river her entire married life made memories here.

Matilda, her gait unsteady, ambled to Fred’s recliner and dropped exhausted into the chair. Warning banners ran across the silent TV screen.

She closed her eyes against the sound of rushing water and pressed Fred’s picture to her chest. Hold on honey; I’m moving to higher ground.

Time to ShareWelcome to another, Stories to Share. Reading is an important part of being a writer and so is recognizing a great story when you read it.

Sometimes, I can’t put my finger on why a story touches me, but when it does it’s time to share it.

Up first – “The Greatest of Ease” by  Sarah Angleton. The 3rd place Winner in Women on Writing (WOW’s) 2015 Summer Flash Fiction Contest.

Next, is “A Sliver of Ivory“ by Vanessa Lafaye from  Books by Women.
