Fun Facts About Labor Day

Happy Labor Day! I don’t know where the time has gone. I’m already seeing, besides the obvious, Halloween decorations, Thanksgiving and Christmas decor lining the shelves of area stores. Too much! Nevertheless, it is September and Christmas will be here in the blink of an eye.

For our family, and I imagine yours too, this particular holiday marks the end of the summer and begins the preparation for our the two major holidays. When I think about how fast time is moving, I’m not sure we really think about which holiday we’re celebrating or why.

So, to commemorate this holiday and the end of another summer come and gone, I thought it would be fun to share a few fun facts about Labor Day. I would love to take credit for all this knowledge, but this brain only holds so much. I’m thankful someone somewhere is keeping notes.

According to the United States Department of Labor:

  1. Labor Day, was created by the labor movement and dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It was designed to pay tribute to the “contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.”
  2. The first recognition came from municipal ordinances between 1885 and 1886. It wasn’t until 1894 that Congress passed the act making the 1st Monday of September a legal holiday.
  3. It’s unclear but often disputed who the founder of Labor Day was, but what is not disputed is that the Central Labor Union (CLU) was behind the proposal. The CLU appointed a  committee and a demonstration and picnic planned.
  4. The first Labor Day was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City.

And Just for fun, can you answer this question correctly?

Enjoy a safe holiday and remember to give thanks to all the hard working men and women who have made us such a prosperous nation. Happy Labor Day 2017!

Happy Father’s Day

Unfortunately, I lost my father when I was five year’s old; and, although I have few memories of my childhood, some of the most vivid are of my daddy.

What I remember most is his smile and the laughter that often rang throughout our home. He was an engaged and loving father.

Me helping daddy was the car!My daddy died at the young age of 32. The loss of him left a void I have felt my entire life. He was taken from us, far too young, but in the short time God gave us together, I had a glimpse of what life might have been. My daddy made me feel loved and safe; for that I am grateful.

If you’re blessed to have your father still in your life – celebrate the day with him. If, like me, you have only memories – honor him.

Mother’s maybe the glue that holds a family together, but father’s are the foundation on which strong families stand firm. Click to Tweet

To all Dads – Happy Father’s Day!

Fun Facts about Father’s Day: First celebrated on June 19, 1910, but did not become a national holiday until 1972 – 58 years after President Woodrow Wilson made Mother’s Day a national holiday.

25 Years and Counting

From the moment I met my husband, more than thirty years ago, I knew he was the one. Both single parents, we took our time before blending our families.
Twenty-five years ago today, I married the love of my life.

It seems as if we blinked and the years were gone. Our children are grown, now, with families of their own; and half of our eight grandchildren are grown.

Over those thirty years, life has handed us a few ups and downs, but we have stood strong. We have enjoyed a good life. God has been good to us.

A talented, loving, and generous man, he is my safe place to fall. After 25 years, this man remains my best friend and given the chance I’d do it all over again.

Happy Anniversary, my love.
