ABOUT ME

Author IMG_3077 Bio:

A nurse turned writer, besides authoring this blog, I  enjoy writing crime, women’s fiction, and non-fiction essays. Although retired, I hold a masters degree in nursing from the University of South Carolina. Once a nurse always a nurse.

A member of the South Carolina Writer’s Workshop, my work has been published in numerous magazines and journals. Including,  All NursesBlasting News, Angie’s Diary, Every Writer’s Resource, Every Day Fiction, Downer Magazine, WOW – The Muffin, featured on No Extra Words Podcast, Dream, Write, Thrive, and Centum Press 100 Voices Anthology, VOL. III.

I currently reside in South Carolina with my Bichon Frisé, Piper and I have just completed my first novel, HELLO HELL. I hope to have it out soon.

My Book:

Maybe Next Time Stories of Murder, Justice & Revenge is now available on Amazon.

Who I Am:

I am a conservative, southern woman, a mother, grandmother, and a retired nurse, having worked in the profession from 1972 until 1995. Reading, writing, family, and friends are my passion, not necessarily in that order.  I enjoy politics, and although I am a Fox Fan, I do have my own opinions.

Our values, beliefs, and opinions are the foundation of who we are, or ultimately become. A few of which I’ll share with you:

  1. I believe family is the foundation in which our country will either succeed or fail.
  2. I believe we all must be kinder than necessary to others. Everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.
  3. I believe an impulsive, short-term goal, at the expense of a long-term goal; will cost you something, which matters much more in the end.
  4. I believe we would be better off if we returned to the old-fashion values of honor, respect, integrity, hard work, gratitude, and appreciation.
  5. I believe in friendships that last a lifetime.
  6. And, I believe words matter, that they can change the world.

Thus, my love of books.

I grew up cutting my teeth on the covers of my mom’s Book of the Month Club selections. As soon as I could read, I did. Inspired by her passion and encouragement, I devoured everything in sight. Mom never censored the books we read and mysteries, thrillers, true crime, romance, and literary fiction, with an edge, became my favorite genres. Endless afternoons lost in another world became my routine growing up, fueling my imagination.

Later, I began sneaking away and climbing the fence into the cow pasture. Sitting by a stream, underneath tall oak trees, surrounded by white and black cows. I filled journals with poems and short stories, and lamentations of life. It was the beginning of my writing career.

The adage, “Southern women don’t gossip, they just tell it like it is,” pretty much describes me.

Many of the stories I write reflect my Southern roots and the people and events, which impacted my life. I write short stories, murder mysteries, flash fiction, literary, dark fiction, and humorous stories based on my days in nursing.

“Southerners love a good tale. They are born reciters, great memory retainers, Diary keepers, letter exchangers… great talkers.”  Eudora Welty

I tell it like it is with a bit of twisted humor with the occasional murder, on the side.

Ernest Hemingway said, “All you have to do is write one true sentence. Write the truest sentence that you know.”

For me, I’m giving it my best shot, and I hope you will join on the journey.

  1. Hi Sheila! I really adhere to numbers 4 & 5 that you listed:

5.I believe in friendships that last a lifetime.

I’ve lived in beautiful Oconee County since 2004. I grew up in Panama City, FL, on the panhandle coast. I’ve been writing (mostly) full-time since 1990 when my first book was published. I’ve written in a few genres, and currently write the Mac McClellan Mystery series for Coffeetown/Camel Press. You can find me at Amazon and Goodreads under E. Michael Helms. I look forward to following your very interesting website.

    Best wishes,

    • Thank you Michael, for taking the time to respond to my post. I’m glad to learn more about you and will definetly check out your mysteries. Congratulations on your writing accomplishments. It’s also nice to hear from others who share those particular values. I believe if we don’t all take a step back and reevaluate, our society in for a world of hurt. Thanks again for taking a stroll through the cow pasture. I look forward to reading more of your comments. Welcome.

  2. Hi Sheila,

I like the content of your blog and have nominated you for the Versatile Blogger Award. Here’s the link: https://comeinsitdown.wordpress.com/2016/10/21/versatile-blogger-award/

Your participation is totally voluntary, you don’t have to accept the nomination. Should you decide not to take part, I will completely understand that and won’t be offended.

I however will appreciate it if you chose to accept it; I see the nomination process as a way to promote my fellow bloggers work across the board and to spread the word.

    Thank you and best wishes,

  4. I love the mental picture you’ve created of you sitting and scribbling away in a pasture. I can see the rays of sunlight filtering through the oak boughs. The fresh scent of earth and flowers carried by a gentle breeze that plays with your hair and cows dotting the meadow around you as the spring babbles past. You bend over your little notebook with a pencil in hand and imagination spills forth…

With all that inspiration around you, it’s easy to see why you are a writer 🙂

  5. Thank you for taking the time out and welcoming me to the “Cow Pasture”! The Introduction above was such a wonderful read! This is the sort of encouragement I crave and something that I incidentally happened to mention in my post today. I hope I can trouble you at times for guidance on writing my own short stories!

  6. Just the type of bloggers I’m looking for to share my thoughts, as well, of respect, the old values, kindness, family — the things that really make life’s journey worthwhile! (And pets!) My primary blog is about my writing life; my secondary blog is about our animal friends giving their views of life; and my others — some newer — are on a variety of subjects, including being good, old-fashioned grateful for life itself and its many rewards. Great to meet you!

  8. I just meandered over to your pasture from the WD platform challenge (well, not directly but that’s what I love about meandering, you never know where you’ll end up.) I’ve had a poetry blog for a while – htpp://rhymeswithbug.com and just recently started a blog for short stories – http://storydribbles.wordpress.com
Looking forward to spending some time in your pasture.

  10. I agree with Silverstein with regards to the name of your blog! Fantastic! Though I didn’t grow up in the South, I did grow up in a farming community so I completely understand the pull that nature has on you for inspiration! 🙂 Loving the eclectic feel of your blog and can’t wait to read more! 🙂

  11. I love how your name for your blog derived. I love the country. I grew up on my grandparents place and still would rather be in wide open spaces. I am from the south too, Mississippi. If you read many of my stories you can tell. I just can’t hide it. 🙂 I’ve noticed that I have to really edit because sometimes I put some of the slang that no one else would understand. Thanks so much for your kind words and I can’t wait to read more of your stories and your blogs.

    • Thank you so much for your kind words and I love meeting other Southerners! 🙂 Agree, there is nothing quite like the openness of the South. Some of my favorite memories are being at my Grandparents farm, as well. I look forward to reading more from you. Thanks for stopping by.

    • I’m always glad to here that from someone else. I was in Walmart yesterday afternoon and just behind me I heard a mom say to her child, “Say goodbye, don’t be disrespectful.” Then , I heard the child say to whomever, “Goodbye.” I couldn’t help myself, I had to turn around. It was a young mother and her son, leaving the hair salon. Our eyes met and I smiled and said, ” I couldn’t help myself. I had to turn around and see the mom who was uttering those words.” She smiled and said, “We don’t teach them who will?” I hugged her and said, ” Exactly. You’re doing a great job.” It made both our days. thanks for stopping by the Cow Pasture.
