WordPress does a phenomenal job keeping up with our blog stats. At the end of the year, they send you an annual report: Your Year in Review.

The report includes:

  1. Posting Patterns – including your longest blogging streak and your Best Day.
  2. Posts that received the most views.
  3. Top Referring sites.
  4. The total number and name of the countries visiting.
  5. The post receiving the most comments and who commented.

To improve your outreach, it’s important to review your stats on a regular basis.

Things you can discover to improve your blog’s performance:

  1. Who’s following and how long.
  2. Where referrals are generated.
  3. The most active keywords.
  4. Who’s leaving comments?
  5. The number of clicks.
  6. The number of visitors.
  7. The most popular day and time to post.
  8. The most popular posts and pages.
  9. The post receiving the most comments.
  10. Total Shares.

  2. I have to be honest and say I do receive these reviews from WordPress but never pay attention to them. My blogging has been sporadic because my priority was to get my first manuscript finished and so I could send it to my writing coach/book editor.
    However, I have to also admit I have a problem with blogging for blogging sake. Many people blog but I am not sure whether the internet is the right place for what they are saying. So I made a vow to myself to blog when I have something to say as a writer, observer, and opinionated person that wants to make a different.
    Listening to your point of view, I have rethought my view about the Yearly reviews from WordPress and this year I won’t delete them when they come into my mailbox.

    • Aw, the freedom of expression. I agree there are a zillion blogs out there, but what may seem unimportant or uninteresting to me may be just what someone else needs. I started out blogging to deal with grief (another blog) then progressed to Cow Pasture. My theme, I guess is all things writing but I also do opinion pieces and articles on other news type sites. I believe words matter and if I spend the time and effort, I need to pay attention to the impact or lack there of I’m making. I enjoy the review and hope it will help you next year as you promote your book. Best of luck and as always love your contributions to the conversation.

    I enjoy reading your blog because you offer helpful insight and useful information, where my focus is solely to entertain. My favorite thing about blogging is the wonderful people I’ve met through this media–including you. 🙂

    • Aw, Shucks. Thank you for the compliment. I love your blog and you certainly are entertaining. A great sense of humor is a gift from God. I started out blogging to deal with grief (another blog), then decided to look more intently at writing. People have told me all my life, I could write. I would probably like to expand my blog to share some of those writings, but who knows. If I learn something about the craft, I try to pass it on. Thank you so much for being a part of the fence jumpers. I’m always glad to see you here.

  5. Hi Sheila. My stats are not impressive, by any stretch of the imagination. But I keep pressing on, posting when I can, and trying to keep things somewhat interesting. I wish I was more disciplined in my approach to blogging, like many of you are. I will be glad when this A-Z challenge is over so I can go back to my lackadaisical blogging methods.

  6. I love to see what countries people are coming to the blog from. And is really satisfying if I can then tie those visit to downloads of any of my stories. (Normally only possible if there’s only 1 visit from a country/ 1 download – like Ecuador and Ghana recently). Really not where I expected people to be visiting from, but hugely gratifying.
